Characteristics and peculiarities

Backgrounds of this model
- The Bentley Turbo R is the successor of the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo. The Turbo R had to enhance the success of the Bentley revival but with a better handling (R means Roadholding).
- The Mulsanne Turbo was sold until the end of 1985 whilst the Turbo R already was manufactured from March 1985. In a part of 1985 both models were manufactured besides each other.
- Untill 1988 the Bentley Turbo R has not been sold in the US, Canada, Japan and Australia due to their emission control regulations. The factory decided not to employ fuel injection.

Original characteristics
- The Bentley Turbo R has basically the same engine and gear box as the Mulsanne Turbo: a 6750 cc V8 engine with a three speed automatic gear box (GM400) and carburetters. The maximum power with turbo is 298 bhp at 4000 rpm.
- The car has a body-coloured radiator shell with vanes.
- The Bentley Turbo R is the first model with cast aluminium alloy wheels. Special centre caps.
- Pirelli 275/55VR15 P7 tyres.
- The same suspension as the Mulsanne Turbo, but the anti-roll bar stiffened by 100% at the front and 60% at the rear, the dampers slightly stiffened, the rear subframe anchored laterally and the steering slightly heavier.
- Turbo R badges.
- Restyled facia with centre console, leather clad steering and rev counter.

Model year 1986
- From 1980 up to and including 1985 the grille was ¼ inch higher than the bonnet. From model year 1986 that problem was settled.
- Distinctive wheel trims.

Model year 1987
- Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection.
- Anti-lock ABS brakes.
- 328 bhp engine.

Model year 1989
- From model year 1989 all Bentleys got paired round headlamps with high pressure jet washers.
- Deeper front airdam.
- Rear skirts.
- Steel sill extensions.
- Red winged 'B' badge.

Model year 1990
- Driver's airbag as an option.

Model year 1992

Model year 1993
- Only in model year 1993 all Bentley badges are enamelled in green.
- The gear lever on the centre console.

Model year 1994
- Driver and front passenger airbags.
- No longer a chrome moulding along the bonnet centre line.
- New style 16 inch alloy wheels with a wider rim section and black background trim centres.
- Electronic Boost Control, designed to override the normal turbo control system during full throttle manoeuvres.
- Shift Energy Management (SEM), which momentarily reduces engine torque before a gear shift, achieving a change that is barely noticeable.
- Adaptive Shift Control (ASC), designed to adapt the transmission pattern in accordance with the manner in which a car is being driven.

Model year 1995
- 17 inch wheels

Model year 1996
- Liquid intercooler.
- The radiator height being reduced by 2 inches.

- Box-style front armrest with stowage compartment.
- Individually controlled cooling air outlets in rear compartment.
- One inch headroom more, made possible by detailed developments to the design of the front seat upholstery.
- 8 percent increase in maximum power, officially quoted at 385 bhp at 4000 rpm.
- Automatic traction control through viscous control differential.

Model year 1997
- The Long wheelbase is standard. The Short wheelbase can be ordered too.
